INSTRUCTIONS FOR SWITCHING TO NEW FILE SERVER

Please read this document completely several times before doing anything. Should you have any questions please contact support@tasware.com

Check network driver for DLINK cards. FETNWSRV is correct. You may also have to change the frame type. There is 802.2 and 802.3. One is newer and the other is older. Check the old server. Look at the frame type. Make sure they match.

It is best to establish a live supervised transfer via MSN MESSENGER ON THE INTERNET. Look for tasware@hotmail.com

1) Boot up new server. Do not connect ethernet yet.

2) Check all configurations options. name, net, ipx, frame etc.

3) Connect ethernet cable to hub.

4) Verify enough connections licences on new server.

5) Let 15-30 minuets elapse while watching system console on both servers. If there are any conflicts you may see periodic messages sent to the system console. Do not restart any DOS workstations at this time unless you have them programed to look for a specific server. Because they may not logon to the right server. For example LOGON OPR01 vs LOGON OPR01.tasware The first says randomly pick a server and try to logon. The second says I want to login to server tasware. Windows looks for specific servers however DOS workstations do not unless hardcoded. So if you accidentally restart a DOS workstation while not done switching you may have to manually login as in login zxyx.server_name.

6) Once 15-30 minutes has elapsed without any warning messages then pick your fastest windows workstation to use to copy files. We will call this the command workstation.

The transfer will be done from the command workstation. in two phases. Phase one is a non critical transfer while this system is up and running. Then comes phase II which requires all files to be closed, all workstations shutdown, old server shutdown and restarted and then the command workstation booted back up and re-mapped to both new and old server. The reason why phase II must be done like this is because it is mission critical that shared files not be open by any other process. The only way to guarantee this condition 100% is to shutdown all workstations and then shutdown the old server.

Phase 1. Run network neighborhood a/k/a my network places and look for new server. Logon and then map a drive to volume SYS of new server. TasWare support suggests mapping drive H:. This document assume drive F is mapped to old server and drive H: mapped to new server.

7) Close out all programs on this workstation. Next shutdown this workstation. Restart and make sure both servers are logged on and both drives are mapped automatically. Keep shutting down and restarting until you have it configured to logon and map both drive automatically. Do not continue until you have mastered this.

Next drop to DOS box.

Type START | RUN | COMMAND

7) Next type H: and verify drive access ON NEW SERVER. type CD \PUBLIC

8) Next we transfer non all non critical files that do not require system shutdown. This will minimize down time. i.e. transfer as many non shared files as possible before.

Tasware support suggests using NCOPY to transfer files. That is a utility located in the \PUBLIC subdirectory of all Netware servers. It will cause a server to server copy. It is similar to the dos/windows XCOPY command accept it causes a server to server copy. In contrast XCOPY or all WINDOWS commands including pasting copies in small chunks from source server to workstation then onto to the destination server. This takes 2-3 times longer.

For brevity of these instructions you must be at the \PUBLIC subdirectory on the new server in order these commands to work as intended. This assumes H: is a network drive mapped as new server and F: is a network drive mapped to old server. At this point the system is still up and taking calls. You are about to transfer non shared files. WATCH THE SCREEN. ASSUMING ALL FILES ARE COPIED OKAY THEN proceed to each step Look for error messages and if you encounter an error write them down, quit switching over and unplug new server ethernet.

H:\PUBLIC> MD \TASWARE

H:\PUBLIC> NCOPY F:\TASWARE\????BK??.* H:\TASWARE

H:\PUBLIC> DEL F:\TASWARE\????BK??.*

H:\PUBLIC> NCOPY F:\TASWARE\CALL??.* H:\TASWARE

H:\PUBLIC> DEL F:\TASWARE\CALL??.*

H:\PUBLIC> NCOPY F:\PDOX45\*.* H:\PDOX45\ /S

H:\PUBLIC> NCOPY F:\REACHDOS\*.* H:\REACHDOS\ /S

H:\PUBLIC> NCOPY F:\TOOLS\*.* H:\TOOLS\ /S

9) Next shutdown this workstation.

THIS CONCLUDES TRANSFER OF NON CRITICAL FILES. ANYTHING FURTHER ASSUMES YOU WILL BE TAKING THE SYSTEM DOWN AND THAT IT MUST STAY DOWN UNTIL ALL OF THE FOLLOWING IS DONE. DO NOT CONTINUE UNTIL YOU HAVE PRE-READ THIS DOCUMENT AND UNDERSTAND IT COMPLETELY.

IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS PERFECTLY OTHERWISE YOU MAY NOT TRANSFER ALL OF THE FILES PROPERLY. IF A FILE IS LEFT OPEN THE NCOPY UTILITY WILL SKIP OVER IT AND YOU PROBABLY WONT EVEN NOTICE THIS.

AT THIS POINT GET READY IN A SHORT WHILE TO CLOSE OUT ALL PROGRAMS RUNNING FROM ALL WORKSTATIONS and to shutdown all workstations accept the one used to do all the commands in these instructions. It should not be running any other programs.

THE ONLY THING OPEN SHOULD BE THE COMMAND PROMPT!

PICK FIRST OPERATOR STATION and press PRESS F10 | QUIT | YES from main login screen. TasWare Opr program should disappear and you should see windows desktop. Next click windows START | SHUTDOWN. ( i.e. Close all programs and shutdown windows) If this goes smoothly then continue this process on all other operator stations.

Next go to CALL SERVER and shutdown by typing Alt + X. Next when computer returns to dos prompt type LOGOUT. Look for message that workstation has been logged out from server. Next power down.

Next go to MESSAGE SERVER and shutdown by typing Alt + X. Next when computer returns to dos prompt type LOGOUT. Look for message that workstation has been logged out from server. Next power down.

Next go to VOICE SERVER and shutdown by CONTROL C You will be asked to abort. Type Y for yes. Next when computer returns to dos prompt type LOGOUT. Look for message that workstation has been logged out from server. Next power down.

Next double check that all workstations are logged out, shutdown and turned off.

Next go to OLD FILE SERVER. Switch to system console. Type down. If it warns you that files are open then SOMETHING WENT WRONG and/or you did not follow instructions properly and will have to take a risk and type Y to shutdown with files open. Otherwise if you do not receive a warning and the server shuts down then good job. When server finishes shutting down it will say type exit to return to DOS. Do not do this. Type RESTART SERVER.

This will cause old server to boot back up. Once server is back up then turn on command workstation. Make sure it comes up okay and that it maps the drive letters. Makes sure that you are not running the TasWare operator station program from the command workstation while you are running the phase II NCOPY commands. If you have this workstation configured to automatically load from the STARTUP group then you need to disable or close the OPR program out before continuing.

Okay at this point this system is down and if you know what your doing you should only have been down about 2-3 minutes. You should have the command workstation booted up.

Next drop to DOS box.

Type START | RUN | COMMAND

Next type H: and verify drive access ON NEW SERVER. type CD \PUBLIC

Next type these final copy commands:

H:\PUBLIC> NCOPY F:\TASWARE\*.* H:\TASWARE\ /S

H:\PUBLIC> NCOPY F:\VMAIL\*.* H:\VMAIL\ /S

These commands should/will take about 5-100 minutes to complete depending on the speed of your network.

When this last command completes then go to old file server, system console and type DOWN and then exit to shut it down. You are now about done. Next you need to change the name on the new server to match the old file server and shutdown and restart. You can skip this step if you prefer to go to each windows workstation and re-map drive F to the new server name.

Next in this order, turn on your CALL SERVER, VOICE SERVER, MESSAGE SERVER AND ALL OPERATOR STATIONS. If you skipped renaming new server then go to each windows workstation and re-map drive F to the new server name.

This concludes the new file server switch over. Should you have any questions please contact support@tasware.com
